Railway Club 1

Ropsley 3

ROPSLEY overcame Railway Club in a closely fought game at Harrowby Lane.

The home side started strongly, playing some good football in the opening stages. But it was Ropsley who took the lead from the penalty spot after James Booth was brought down while cutting inside from the left.

Chris Carr put the ball on the spot and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Railway pushed forward in search of an equaliser but the Ropsley defence held firm and then caught the home side out on the break. A Railway cross was punched clear and Ropsley’s Rich Healey set off from the halfway line. He beat the last defender before firing into the roof of the net.

Ropsley effectively killed the game off early in the second half after central midfielder Tom Hill found himself on the right flank. His cross-cum-shot looped over the Railway goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Railway fought hard to get back in the game. After being denied a penalty shout they went close with an effort scrambled off the line by Ropsley’s man-of-the-match keeper Neil Graham.

But Graham was not infallible and allowed Railway Club to grab a consolation goal when a long throw-in was flicked into the corner in the dying seconds.
