Grantham Town 0
Halesowen Town 2
Grantham Town suffered their second home defeat of the season at The Meres on Saturday, conceding two first half goals from Halesowen’s two top goal scorers – Ben Haseley and Iyesden Christie.
The visitors were on top in the first half and had their first chance when Haseley set up Christie in the 14th minute. Christie eluded two Gingerbreads defenders and fired off his shot, but it flew off the inside of the crossbar.
Grantham striker Stefan Bilyk had a chance at the other end and Ben Fairclough almost had the ball in the back of the net but he was denied from close range by Halesowen goalkeeper Matt Sargeant with a last gasp touch.
The Gingerbreads held out until the 26th minute when Thomas Tonks’s long throw-in was flicked on by Kris Green and seized on by Haseley who headed into the back of the net.
With three minutes of the first half remaining, Grantham conceded a second time when Christie caught Gingerbreads keeper Dan Haystead well off his line after a clearance and lobbed him from 35 yards.
There were to be no more goals in the second half, the pace of which Halesowen were determined to control, and which they did with ease at times.
Chances were on goal were scarce at both ends, with Grantham’s best coming from Rhys Lewis in the 71st minute, but he put his effort just wide of the goalpost.
