Grantham Town 0
Gresley FC 2
Grantham Town went out of the league cup at The Meres on Tuesday night, conceding two second-half goals to Division One South side Gresley.
After a lively start from both sides, the Gingerbreads generally dominated the first half, spending the majority of the 45 minutes on the front foot.
New signing Charley Sanders, along with fellow front men Greg Smith and Jamie Jackson, impressed with Sanders having perhaps the best chance of the half in the 27th minute, but he flicked his header straight to Gresley keeper Mats Morch after a good ball from fellow new boy Anton Foster.
The visitors’ chances came on the break with former Gingerbread Alex Steadman the main danger man.
Smith had a couple of chances late on in the first half but the two sides returned to the changing rooms goalless.
The Gingerbreads had several opportunities early in the second half through Adie Hawes and Smith but all attempts were dealt with ably by Morch.
Town’s defence looked questionable at times and Gresley’s Lucas Harrison forced a good save from Dan Haystead on 57 minutes, testing the home stopper with a 25-yard drive.
Haystead saved former Gingerbread Paolo Piliero’s 66th minute effort with his legs as Gresley looked to have found the key to unlock the Grantham defence with ease.
Town’s composure from the first half was no longer in evidence and it was no surprise when the visitors finally found the target, with Jack Langston firing in on 71 minutes following good build-up play.
Grantham conceded a penalty in the 86th minute when Steadman was brought down in the box, but Haystead dived to save Kieran O’Connell’s poor spot-kick.
The home side still had a chance or two but Gresley sealed the win with two minutes remaining when Piliero fired in after his side once again unlocked the Grantham back lines.
