Grantham Town eventually cruised through to the second qualifying round of the competition after a dire first half saw them concede first.

Northern Counties East League side Clipstone displayed little to give away their inferiority in the first 45 minutes, and Grantham did themselves no favours with poor passing and ball control in general.

The Gingerbreads were made to pay for their looseness when Jamie Smith found a gaping hole in the Grantham defence. Dan Haystead ran out to challenge but the Cobras number 10 made no mistake from 20 yards.

But Town replied just three minutes later. Out of the blue, Jordan Hempenstall drove in a shot that was too rapid for visting goalkeeper Rob White and the Gingerbreads were level.

Grantham joint manager Jimmy Albans’ half time pep talk bore fruit just six minutes after the break when Greg Smith put his side in front, getting on the end of Tom Batchelor’s long ball from midfield and lobbing White with aplomb.

Town extended their lead in the 53rd minute, with Hempenstall slicing through the Clipstone defence, sidestepping White and knocking the ball in for 3-1.

The Gingerbreads sealed victory with eight minutes remaining. Hempenstall crossed in to the box where Smith layed the ball off for Sam Purcicoe who blasted in from close range.
