Curzon Ashton 2
Grantham Town 4
Grantham Town put in a sterling performance to stop the high-flying second in the league side in their tracks.
Sam Purcicoe put the Gingerbreads in front early on with his eighth minute effort when the home side failed to clear efficiently, with the Grantham full back firing the ball back at goal and beating keeper Hakan Burton.
Curzon levelled seven minutes later after Town keeper Dan Haystead’s deflection went to Thomas Eckersley who planted the ball in the back of the net.
Dan Cockerline restored Grantham’s lead on the quarter hour mark, beating the Curzon defence, he slotted past Burton from inside the six-yard box.
Paul Grimes got back to scoring ways with a chip-in from the edge of the penalty area to extend Town’s advantage to 3-1 in the 24th minute.
The Gingerbreads held that lead until half time but the home side pulled a second goal back two minutes after the break with a Ryan Brooke header in at the far post.
The home side had a chance to level three minutes later but Ryan Watson fired straight to Haystead. Matthew Warburton had an opportunity too not long after but he dragged his effort wide of the target.
Grantham made Curzon’s afternoon a little harder when they scored a fourth through Cockerline, once again, who ran into the box and slotted home in the 56th minute
The home side continued to attempt to address the situation and several more chances to try and reduce the deficit.
Brooke dragged his shot wide four minutes after the hour mark and Warburton fired straight at the Grantham keeper six minutes later.
With nine minutes left on the clock, Eckersley was picked out at the far post but he headed wide of the target, as the Gingerbreads held on comfortably for a handsome win and a slight move up to eighth in the league.
