Grantham Town 4

Blyth Spartans 2

Grantham Town shocked the visitors with a goal in the opening minute when Ash Burbeary got on to a through-ball, darted forward and fired in past Spartans keeper Conor Grant.

But Blyth levelled just four minutes later when the always troublesome Sonny Andrews was given too much space, beat the last defender and dinked the ball in past Town’s Dan Haystead.

The Gingerbreads regained the lead on 21 minutes. Excellent build-up play opened up the Blyth back line and resulted in Jack Andrews crossing for Greg Smith who supplied Jamie McGhee to slot home.

The league’s top scorer, Greg Smith, extended Grantham’s lead eight minutes later when he headed in from an excellent Burbeary free kick.

Then Burbeary made it 4-1 just before the break, firing in from the spot after Grant brought Greg Smith down in the box, which resulted in the Spartans stopper receiving a straight red.

The Gingerbreads could be accused of sitting back on their lead in the second half and were to score no more.

Ten-man Spartans pulled a second goal back through Sonny Andrews who fired in the rebound after Haystead saved his initial penalty.
