Lincolnshire Junior Cup
Barrowby Swans had a break from their busy league programme on Saturday when they entertained Scunthorpe Premier League side Messingham in the county cup.
The opening 15 minutes saw a scrappy affair with both teams finding it hard to break through some resolute defending.
George Sheen began to make headway, cutting in from wide right and delivering a number of dangerous balls across goal. Barrowby really started to put the away goal under pressure and McDonald was unfortunate not to break the deadlock when the ball was cut back from the byline only for his first-time shot to nestle safely into the keeper’s arms.
But the sustained pressure paid off just before half time and it was McDonald that took the glory when, from a rebounded effort, he pounced to drill in from close quarters.
The second half saw Barrowby turn the screw. Billy Stubbs found himself in the box from a set play and dispatched a loose ball convincingly to double the lead.
Man-of-the-match Barry Payne had caused the visitors problems all afternoon and was rewarded when he hooked in the third. It was no surprise when Payne doubled his tally for The Swans’ fourth and substitute Loveridge rolled in a fifth.
The tireless Warner completed the rout when he side footed past the helpless Messingham keeper.
A home side consolation goal could not take the shine off what was a magnificent display from The Swans which safely took them through to the third round when they will face Hykeham Town away on November 9.
Match sponsor was Grantham Honda.
