Gonerby 3

Sutton on Trent 1

The season opener proved to be a close affair with both teams playing their first competitive 11-a-side game.

Baker hit the post and Bramley went close for Gonerby, before Stewardson made a series of fine saves for Gonerby to keep the game goalless at half time.

Sutton pressed after the break and Stewardson again denied them before the visitors eventually took a deserved lead with a tap-in from a corner.

Gonerby upped their game and equalised when Coates scored from a Robson corner, and then Coates gave them the lead almost immediately with another great finish from a flag kick.

Meffen capped a fine personal performance to seal the win with a clinical strike from the edge of the box.

Gonerby man of the match was Baker.

Navenby 1

Great Ponton 1

Ponton’s season got off to a flying start when Joseph De’Ath rounded the keeper to score after only 30 seconds.

Ponton failed to add to their tally and were made to pay when Oliver Eagle converted from the penalty spot to level the scores.

A hard fought second half saw Ponton again dominate but fail to take their opportunities, with the Navenby keeper saving a penalty.

A solid Ponton back line of Croft, Armstrong and Simmonds kept the home side at bay and, with keeper Ted Sweeney making a crucial save in the final minutes, injuring himself in the process, the score remained 1-1 .

Ponton man of the match was Jack Croft.
