Rothwell Corinthians 5
Harrowby United 1
Harrowby United visited Sergeants Lawn on a bright sunny afternoon in Northamptonshire, but left under a cloud as they arguably produced their worst performance of the season.
The Arrows started the game well enough and after only four minutes Scott Webb played a ball through to set Christian Andersen away for a one-on-one chance. The young Harrowby midfielder took the ball on but took a heavy touch as he approached Martin Thorpe, allowing the keeper to get out and block. On six minutes Harrowby had a let-off when an unmarked Kalon Peniakso headed a corner over the cross bar.
The Arrows poked their noses in front after 16 minutes when a deep cross into the Rothwell box from Sam Weatherstone was stabbed into the net from a couple of yards out by Lewis Watson. Five minutes later, Danny Durkin had a chance to double the lead when he was put through for another one-on-one with Thorpe, but could only fire his shot straight at the keeper.
Corinthians, having weathered the early Harrowby threat, took control of the game and put the visitors on the back foot.
Harrowby picked up the first two of a total of six yellow cards by the half hour mark as their discipline slipped, Ian Hillier and Sam Hill going into referee Mr Glazewski’s notebook before Rothwell equalised after 35 minutes. Hillier lost possession in midfield, allowing a ball over the top which was reached first by Jordan Henson, slightly ahead of Harrowby keeper Craig Rhodes. Henson’s delicate lob caught out the Harrowby custodian and found its way into the net.
Four minutes before the break, Rothwell had turned the game around as a probing cross to the far post was headed into his own net by Harrowby’s Sam Hill, under pressure from Peniakso.
Corinthian’s increased their lead two minutes into the second half when a low cross across the six yard box from the right presented Mersen Styles a simple tap-in at the far post. Three minutes later Styles notched his second as his low free kick from right right was misjudged by Rhodes and found its way into the net without another touch.
Rick Brewer became the third yellow card recipient before Rothwell added a fifth goal. A corner from the right was flapped at by Rhodes and found its way to Peniakso who nodded home from a yard out.
Simon Bolland and Ryan Tittensor joined the referee’s charge sheet before Scott Webb hit the left hand post after 66 minutes with a free kick from 20 yards out, the Arrows’ only worthy effort of the second half.
Joe Wilcox became the sixth Arrows yellow card victim in the final minute before Mr Glazewski blew for time to put Harrowby out of their misery.
