Second defeat in three days for Gingerbreads

Rhyl 2

Grantham Town 0

A GOAL in each half gave Welsh hosts Rhyl victory in a lively encounter. The Gingerbreads were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after having the better of play for much of the game.

In the first half, the home side’s front line looked lively and Grantham were hard pressed to keep them under control. Quick play after 18 minutes saw the hosts take the lead. The ball was spread wide to Scott Beckett and his cross took a ricochet before falling to Martin Powell who scored past a wrong-footed Rob Murray.

Lee Potts caused the home defence continual problems with his driving runs down the flanks. Ben Saunders put a good header just wide as Grantham competed well all around the pitch.

Midway through the first half, the Rhyl goal bore a charmed life. In one melee after a corner, the Gingerbreads hit the crossbar, the post and then the post again as Grant Brindley almost got the equalising goal.

Second half substitutions made little difference to the game as Grantham again had the better of play, but again conceded a goal. With 12 minutes to go, Rhyl substitute Jimmy Gambino got on the end of a ball played over the top of the Grantham defence and slipped his shot past Murray.

Inside the last quarter, Grantham again had chances to get something out of the game. Both Gio Carchedi and Potts brought good saves from Rhyl goalkeeper Stefan Holden, but neither could register on the scoresheet for the Gingerbreads.
