Grantham Town 2
Hyde United 0
Goals from Greg Smith and Danny Meadows earned Grantham Town victory at home to Hyde United on Saturday.
It was a much-needed result for the Gingerbreads, ending their three-game losing streak.
Meadows and Ben Harris caused Hyde early problems with balls into the box as the hosts began at a high tempo.
In response, Jake Turner held on to an effort from the away side.
But back came Grantham, Micky Emmott curling the ball wide of the far post and Harris twice thwarted by Ed Wilcynski.
With little more than half--an-hour played, a defensive slip by Grantham allowed Scott Spencer a run at goal, but after rounding Turner he inexplicably hit the bar.
Turner then pulled off a reaction save to tip Ayton Bevins’ header over.
Grantham ended the half on the attack with Rhys Lewis seeing his header go just wide, while Wilcynski saved Ben Saunders’ chip.
After the re-start Town probed further, Lee Shaw just failing to meet Saunders’ flick-on and then seeing his low cross elude team-mates in the box.
With 14 minutes remaining, Grantham took the lead when Emmott curled a cross into the near post and substitute Smith got in front of keeper Wilcynski to turn the ball home.
The Gingerbreads added a second goal on 86 minutes when Smith played in Shaw, who was then brought down in the box.
Meadows converted the penalty to settle the contest.
