Gingerbreads snap up four for new season
Top masters swimmers from across the country showed the youngsters how it’s done at Grantham Swimming Club’s first ever open Masters Meet.
Men and women aged between 18 and 70 travelled to the Meres Leisure Centre from as far away as Brighton and Southport.
The oldest entrant was 70-year-old William Sampson.
He was competing for the first time since the 1970s and tackled five events including 100m freestyle and 50 butterfly.
Grantham Swimming Club secretary Zoe Lewis said: “It was great to see so many swimmers willing to travel from so far away to compete in our pool here at the Meres.
“We’re lucky to have such great facilities here, including a pool with a movable floor, electronic timing and scoreboard and top-of-the range diving blocks.
“We hope the swimmers enjoyed the experience.”
Spot prizes were given out at random and there were awards for the top male and top female in each age group.
Prizes included hats sponsored by Grantham Masters swimmer Marc Turnbull of GNAT UK.
Danny Meadows, Michael Hollingsworth, Lee Shaw and Stefan Galinski have all committed to the club by signing contracts for the 2016-17 Evo Stik Northern Premier League (Premier Division) campaign.
“It’s really good to have got this done so early,” manager Adam Stevens said.
“All four lads are a big part of my plans for next season and I am delighted that they have committed to us again.”
Shaw ended the season by claiming a hat-trick of awards at Grantham Town’s presentation night.
He collected the Supporters’ Player of the Year and Manager’s Player of the Year accolades, as well as the Golden Boot.
Keeper Jake Turner got the nod from the dressing room as he received the Players’ Player award.
The George and Marge Freeston Award went to Russ Cousins and Andy Lambley for their hard work and desire to improve their under 18 and under 13 sides.
The awards night was held at The Gingerbread on Saturday, where the first team squad came together with supporters and sponsors.
President Roger Booth was compere for the evening.
Alongside the awards, supporters who sponsored a player for the season received their match shirts.
