GOLF: Belton Woods captains play together for first time

This year’s Belton Woods captains Harry McKeen and Wendy Stewart were able to play together for the first time in the Spring Mixed competition, which was renamed ‘When Harry met Wendy’.

There was a good turnout of teams, consisting of two men and one lady, and the match was played in difficult conditions on a cold day. Presentation of prizes followed the competition.

In a closely-fought contest, winners with 72 points were Trudi and Annan Galloway, with Allan Haynes. One point adrift were runners-up Bruce and Becky Foster, with Jeff Earl, and Paul and Lesley Perrin, with Brian Robinson, were third 70.


Whilst playing in one of the senior captain’s social events on the Woodside Course, Ian Nisbet struck a hole-in-one on the par three fourth hole. He duly celebrated the occasion with the seniors on his return to the clubhouse.

l The Marshall’s March Monthly Medal was won by Tom Rea by one stroke over John Williams, scoring a net 73 to John’s 74.

Others: 3 John Macgillivray 77, 4 Mike Gulliford 78 ocb, 5 Ken Claxon 78, 6 Phil Turrell 80, 7 George Forbes 81 ocb, 8 Roger Hanratty 81, 9 Pete Stephenson 82 ocb, 10 John Sabin 82.



Last week saw the biggest attendance of the series for the seniors’ Winter Warmer at Stoke Rochford, with 59 players taking to the fairways to competein a pairs Stokesome.

Winners were the last pairing of the day, Graham Manton and Barry Gaunt, who returned a score of 41 points, two points clear of Brian White and Roland Slack who finished second on countback from Brian Ayto and Greg Ewart.

Overall leader with one round to play is Brian White with 51 points from Phil White on 47 and Brian Ayto (43).

The Slack Goblet will now be a straight head-to-head between John Smeeton and John Wright who each have 13 single points.


Stoke Rochford ladies’ season began with the Early Birds 7/8th Stableford competition, won by Norma Varley with 32 points.

Runner-up was Dorne Werner with 31 points, on countback from Sue Booth.

First in the March Wednesday Medal was Phillippa Smith with 75. Second with 76 was Marion Carvath and Sheila Dugmore (78) was third. The scratch prize won by Sue Booth (87).

The Hi-Low Stableford Greensome was played on a very blustery day and was won by Pam Watson and Jane Mantell with 38 points. Two points adrift were runners-up Sue Booth and Marion Carvath on 36.

The Joy Vase, a three-team event off 7/8th handicap, was won by Sue Booth, Carol Hamilton and Doris Kent with 70 points.


Gary Benbow enjoyed a fine top position in the field of the March Saturday Stableford qualifier, returning a scorecard of 42 points.

Sword of Achievement title holder Martin Corby won Category 1-3 with 41 points, from Malcolm Edwards who also scored 41. Mags McArthur’s 40 points was best of the ladies’ entries, with Amanda Roberts finishing as runner-up.

In the Order of Merit, Mags came in ahead of Paul McCarthy, Dick Marshall and Mick Green.

The twos sweep was shared by Bruce Macfarlane, Pete Martin, Darren Nicholson, Keith Machlachlan and Steve Davis.

l Sudbrook seniors celebrated the start of their league season with a warm-up stableford at South Kyme, with teams from all five of the member clubs.

Best of the Sudbrook Moor cards was that of Geoff Wilkins, with the team finishing second on aggregate.
