GOLF: Martin wins year-long Sudbrook Moor’s Sword of Achievement trophy

SUDBROOK MOOR

Sudbrook Moor’s Sword of Achievement is the main club Order of Merit Trophy and is played for once a month by all club members in a Saturday qualifier format.

The qualifying year runs from December to November and this time the worthy winner was Martin Corby who plays off a handicap of four. He accrued 131 Order of Merit points and his winning margin was 16.

Martin took part in all 12 events and scored points in 10 of them, with his six best scores seeing him take two first places, two fifths, a sixth and a seventh.

Captain of the club’s Scratch ‘A’ Team, Bruce Macfarlane was runner-up for the second successwive year with 115 points, with Neil Baker once again finishing in the top three. Defending champion Graham Ritchie could only manage sixth this year.

Best lady was Yvonne Geach who played 11 of the events to finish on 70 points.

Dedicated others who played every event were Jim Garriock, Jeff Ward and Barry Rohland.

Rest of the top 10 scores: 3 Neil Baker 114, 4 Jim Garriock 103, 5 Paul McCarthy 91, 6 Graham Ritchie 90, 7 Michael Coupland 89, 8 Jon Machin 88, 9 Craig Machin 87, 10 Jim Gorski/Paul Williamson 83.

Jim Gorski scored a top place in the June Medal, when his score went forward to the England Golf Union for the EGU Gold Medal. Jon Machin won a top place in the April Medal, winning him the club’s Slee Putter Trophy.
