Two amateur boxers from Browny's Boxing Gym on Saturday travelled down to Basildon, Essex, where they were competing in the Challenge Cup Championship.

Representing the gym were 14-year-olds Tommy Newcombe and Sam Smith, who both live in Grantham. Tommy was entered in the 58kg weight category and Sam in the 55kg category.

After both reached their respective finals, Sam was first to box against a lad from Dale Youth ABC. His opponent was very flash and tried to intimidate him, but Sam got behind his boxing and broke him down to achieve the win and be crowned the 55kg Challenge Cup champion.

Next up was Tommy who was up against a youngster from Moor Lane ABC. Again, his opponent came out thinking he would have the upper hand, but Tommy stuck to his boxing, working head and body, steadily breaking him down until he was in full control, to be crowned 58kg Challenge Cup champion.

Head coach and gym owner Russ Brown said: "I'm so proud of my boys, they work so hard in the gym, and on the day listened to every instruction they were given."

Tommy and Sam will be back in action next Sunday when they are on the road again for another competition in Hertfordshire.

+ If you are interested in boxing, Browny's Boxing Gym has now relocated to 3 Dysart Road, Grantham.
