Grantham Town will be disappointed to have had to share the points with their visitors to The Meres after they dominated the majority of play in the 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The Gingerbreads had lowly Ilkeston on the back foot from early on and went in front in the 21st minute. Lee Shaw held the ball up well on the right before feeding Danny Meadows whose whipped in cross was tucked away by Luke Shaw.

It was all Grantham going forward for the remainder of the first half, but with no further reward.

Town were on the attack again straight after the break, with Felipe Barcelos pulling a good save out of Ilkeston keeper Dale Eve.

The visitors defended stoutly in numbers and still showed very little going upfield.

But the game changed following the 68th minute introduction of Ilkeston substitute Ben Morris. Morris won a corner kick two minutes later. He took the flag kick which was poorly delivered and repelled by a Grantham defender, but only as far as Danny Gordon who fooled Town keeper Kieran Preston with a shot that went in off the far post – probably Ilkeston’s only shot on target all game.

The complexion of the game did not really change as the Gingerbreads continued to threaten with wave after wave of attacks, but they could find joy, with the visitors appearing content with a point – and so they should.

There were chances aplenty for Grantham, but still still they were unable to make them count.

Grantham Town: Preston, Wildin, Purcicoe, Hollingsworth (Curtis 78), Galinski (c), Meadows, Clifton Lewis, Barcelos, Lee Shaw, Luke Shaw (Burrows 78). Subs not used: Dasaolu, Gibbons, Martin. Att: 314.
