Grantham Town triumph over lowly Belper
Northern Premier League
Belper Town 1
Grantham Town 2
Grantham Town enjoyed a good start to the Easter weekend with victory over basement side Belper Town on Saturday.
Former Grantham boss Jimmy Albans’ side contained seven former Gingerbreads, but it was the current ones who came out on top.
In a fairly end to end affair, both sides had goal scoring opportunities early on, with Grantham’s Liam Read firing straight at Dan Haystead in the fifth minute.
Two minutes later at the other end, Nabil Sharrif’s effort was parried by Jake Turner, with Ben Turner’s shot from the rebound finding the side netting.
The Gingerbreads had another chance but Michal Hollingsworth fired over the crossbar, and the Nailers went close through Laurie Wilson on 28 minutes, but his shot went awry.
Grantham took the lead four minutes later, with Hollingworth’s screamer giving Haystead no chance.
The Gingerbreads almost doubled their advantage five minutes before the break, but Read’s effort was cleared off the line.
Grantham had further chances before half time through Michael Emmott and Danny Meadows, whose free kick went just over the bar.
Gingerbreads captain Sam Purcicoe fired over three minutes into the second half whilst, at the other end, Paul Grimes went close with a free kick for Belper on 51 minutes.
And it was Grimes who levelled the scores in the 57th minute, firing in from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Rhys Lewis in the box.
Both teams had opportunities to move ahead, with Meadows not far off on the hour, and Grimes and Rob Stevenson going close at the other end of the pitch.
Haystead denied Liam Hurst in the 64th minute and Read’s 72nd minute strike was blocked by Kern Miller.
There were further chances at both ends, with Haystead once again spoiling Read’s day and Stevenson firing wide for the Nailers.
The Gingerbreads left it late to grab the winner when substitute Lee Ndlovu’s 88th minute effort caught Haystead out to claim all three points.
