GYMNASTICS: Grantham schools claim honours in East Mids Champs
Grantham was well represented in this year’s East Midlands Schools Floor and Vault Championships at Stamford and claimed several honours.
King’s School and Priory Ruskin Academy battled it out in the under-19 boys’ team competition, with high quality vaults and floor being performed by sets of students. King’s came out on top with 116.4 points, just ahead of Priory Ruskin on 115.6, giving King’s a chance to shine in the national finals.
St Mary’s and Cliffedale both competed in the under-11 age group in the boys’ and girls’ events respectively. Cliffedale girls had tough competition from Stamford Junior School, but all performed well to claim a well deserved second place. The St Mary’s boys produced eight clean performances to finish top and progress to the next round in Stoke.
In both the under-14 and under-19 girls’ competitions, Walton and KGGS worked well to take second and third spots respectively in each age group, behind Spalding high. The closest competition for Walton was in the younger event in which there were only 1.2 points separating them from the winners.
The final team event was for Priory Ruskin who also took second place in the under-14 mixed event, with a very young team against Sir John Gleed. Only 0.4 separated the teams after vault, but Gleed produced some quality floor routines for first place.
Individually, Grantham gymnasts placed well with the following results: under-19 boys’ – 1 Rhys Rymer (PRA) 30.0, 2 Jacob Armstrong (King’s) 29.9, 3 Daniel Watson (King’s) 29.3; under-19 girls’ – 2 Phoebe Collins (Walton) 30.1; under-14 boys’ – 3 Kyle Davidson (PRA) 28.2; under-14 girls’ – 2 Chloe Goy (Walton) 30.2; under-11 boys’ – 1 Jack Barnes (St Mary’s) 28.0, 2 Harry Clements (St Mary’s) 27.3, 3 Ryan Collingwood St Mary’s 27.0.
