GYMNASTICS: Priory Ruskin boys qualify for nationals

Grantham was well represented and produced some fine performances at the East Midlands Schools Gymnastics Floor and Vault Championships, held at Stamford Junior School.

Priory Ruskin produced some clean routines to win the under-19 boys event and qualify through to the National Finals at Stoke- on-Trent in May. George Lodge and Kyle Davidson, both Priory, were level after floor but George clinched the top spot individually after vault.

St Mary’s and Cliffedale both competed in the under-11 age group in the mixed and girls events respectively. Cliffedale girls all performed well to claim a well deserved third place behind two strong teams from Stamford. The St Mary’s mixed team also worked well with few mistakes to take second place behind Brooke Priory from Oakham. Individually, Lilliya Greene took equal second, just 0.3 behind the top girl from Brooke Priory.

In the under-14 girls competitions, KGGS worked well and produced the highest vault total of the age group but could not quite stay ahead on floor to beat Spalding High, so finished in the runners-up spot. Kathleen Sanger also worked well on floor, scoring 15 out of a possible maximum of 16, to take the overall title by just 0.2 points. Walton finished fourth.

In the under-14 mixed event, Priory Ruskin’s young team finished second and showed much promise for next year. Their vaults were comparable to the winners from Stamford, but just need to improve on the consistency of their floor routines. They took the runners-up spot with good individual performances from Neeve Pexton and Alisha Shepherd.

In the under-19 girls, KGGS took fourth and Walton fifth.

Individual honours: U19 boys – 1 George Lodge (PRA), 2 Kyle Davidson (PRA), 3 Lucas Kokocinski (PRA); U14 girls – 1 Kathleen Sanger (KGGS); U14 mixed – =3 Neeve Pexton (PRA), =3 Alisha Shepherd (PRA); U11 mixed – 2 Lilliya Greene (St Mary’s).
