GYMNASTICS: Two schools do Grantham and East Mids proud at British championships
Two Grantham schools represented East Midlands in the British Schools Floor and Vault Gymnastics Championships at Fenton Manor, Stoke, last weekend.
Both schools had an early start with 8am warm up times and Tom Sweeney (St Mary’s) had the honour of starting off the whole weekend’s performances.
There were 12 regions and several were connected with gymnastics schools/academies,that are able to train nearly every day, and therefore the standard of performance throughout the championships was very high.
King’s School under-19 boys achieved Grantham’s highest team placing, with very high scores on the vault and consistent performances on the floor, to take silver overall. Daniel Watson scored 15.25 and Ryan Champion 14.85, producing the two highest scores of the day on the vault. Tom Wharmby, who was competing in his seventh national finals, and Jacob Armstrong completed the team line-up.
St Mary’s competed in the Primary under-11 boys competition and gained valuable experience against some very strong schools from other regions to finish in a creditable eight place overall.
High scores were attained by Harry Clements (13.20) who produced a very neat floor routine, and Ryan Collingwood (14.25) for a much improved vault. Other team members were Tom Wharmby, Jack Barnes and Oliwier Wnukowski.
