Club player Flynn represents East Midlands

Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club member and Kings School pupil Flynn Connolly represented the East Midlands Region as part of a team at the Inter-Regional Championships held at RAF Cosford, near Telford.

Flynn was asked to play for the Cadet squad by the regional coach after only just missing out on automatic qualification by finishing fourth in the qualifying event held earlier in the year. His coach was impressed by Flynn’s improvement over the last year and thought he deserved a chance of featuring for the regional squad made up of players from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

The East Midlands team was split into a boys and girls squad and each featured players in all the age categories – under-11s, under-13s and Cadets.

The Saturday morning saw the team event open proceedings and both East Midlands squads were up against it from the off, with both teams taking the odd game here and there.

After all the results from across all six categories were combined, the East Midlands finished the team event in sixth place.

The afternoon saw Flynn and his team-mates do battle in the individual competition. Again, it was a tough ask of not just Flynn, but all the squad,

Flynn had a tough group to get out of with all the players in it a lot higher ranked, but this did not deter him. He set about his task the best he could but slipped to a 3-0 defeat, going down 11-4 11-8 14-12 to Liam Biddy.

Tiredness took hold of Flynn after all his efforts in the morning events where he had played singles and he slipped to a second 3-0 defeat (11-6 11-8 11-5).

His luck seemed to have deserted him and there were a few signs of frustration, but even with a renewed focus and calmness in his last group match, he succumbed once again to a 3-0 loss (11-6 11-8 11-2).

Despite the disappointing results, Flynn was proud to have given his best and to have represented the region.

It has been a long season for Flynn who, as well as playing, has also recently become a Level One umpire and joins the increasing ranks of qualified officials at the club.
