Leaders are toppled

Grantham & Melton Cricket Association Division Three

Croxton Kerrial 176-3, Stamford Town 175.

Croxton Kerrial beat table toppers Stamford Town in a tense contest.

Stamford won the toss and elected to bowl, but the visitors’ Nigel Howitt and Danny Aylin looked comfortable.

At the 20 over mark, Croxton had reached 97 without loss with skipper Aylin reaching his 50.

Howitt was the first to go, giving veteran Dave Roberts his first wicket, but the innings momentum continued with Aylin eventually falling for 81 and Eddie Cham finishing on 37 not out.

In reply, the home side began well with Simmonds (57) and Wallis leading the charge.

Wallis was the first to go, but when Simmonds was bowled by Leon Aylin for 57 and Parkes was caught for 43 it seemed as though the tide had turned.

Cham (5-27) ripped out the Town middle order and, despite a late charge by Roberts, it was Croxton who triumphed by one run.
