MARTIAL ARTS: Grantham club instructor happy with students at national championships
Members of Grantham Ji-Shin Wado Karate Club took part in the annual National Championships at Derby.
They had trained hard with many long hours of dedication and it paid off when they returned home with medals after competing with martial artists from around Great Britain.
Estelle Forte, Bethany Ivermee and Andrew Tonge took part in the morning rounds of Kata, in which they all did very well but missed out on the medals. Estelle went out to the eventual winner Chloe Machin, an England squad member.
But then came the Kumite (free fighting) in which the Grantham club took a bronze medal in the team event with Hermione Farmer, Andrew Tonge and Oliver Crostan. In individual Kumite, Bethany Ivermee won bronze and Andrew also took another bronze medal.
Grantham club instructor Angie Emms (5th dan) said she was very happy with how her students had performed. She said: “It was a tough competition and they came through brilliantly and gained great knowledge and a little more character.
“Some had never been in a big competition before, so it made the results even more amazing.
“I was proud how they all conducted themselves on the Tatami. I’m a very happy Sensei.”
