Grantham British Chinese Kickboxing Association youngster Charlie Digan has become a European champion aged just six years old.

The youngest ever to represent the BCKA national team, Charlie took part in the WKC European Open Championships in Manchester on Sunday and came home with a gold medal.

It was his first major tournament for the team and he fought in the six years and under open weight division.

He follows in the footsteps of his father and Grantham coach Trevor Digan who was part of the national team when it was formed 20 years ago.

The win has given Charlie the opportunity to fight at the World Championships in Portugal in October, representing the WKC England team.

The Grantham club is desperate to get sponsors on board to help make Charlie’s bid for the Worlds a reality. They have Chandlers Agricultural on board already as a main sponsor, but are still £500 short of the target needed.

Trevor is asking for local businesses to get behind Charlie and in return their company logos will go on Charlie’s fight suit for the Worlds. Contact Trevor on 07727 975417 or email trevor@dukesburygardenroom.co.uk

Other club members who excelled at the Euros were Laurence Rose who took gold in points and bronze in continuous, and Alex Barrowowman who bagged three golds in kumite, points and continuous.

l Grantham BCKA have a new children’s kickboxing class for ages four and above at St Anne’s School, Harrowby Road, on Wednesdays between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. The club runs a mixed class at The Meres leisure centre on Monday nights from 7pm till 8.30pm.
