Grantham Badminton Club men’s first team triumphed away at Westside in Division One of the Newark League.

The top two pairs, Jan Bailey with Tim Hought and Nick Gill with Chung Chan, won three rubbers, whilst third pair Andrew Watson with reserve Jon Ashley almost beat the opposition’s first pair, but went down 23-21 in the third and deciding game, but otherwise lost their rubbers, with the final score being 6-3 to Grantham.

The ladies’ second string were defeated 6-0 at home by a strong Cross O’Cliff in Division One. Despite the scoreline, Grantham were heartened by the closeness of many tussles, with pairings scoring game wins in many rubbers, only to eventually lose by 2-1 scorelines.

Unbeaten this season, Grantham men’s third team played away to established Division Three team Woodborough.

With difficult to control plastic shuttles adding to the challenge, Grantham came away with a 7-2 victory. Both top pairings – Jon Ashley with Chris Graves and Andy Attewell with Ben Attewell – scored maximum rubbers. Picking up a single rubber were Rob Scarborough and Daniel Watson.

In the Melton League Division One, Grantham’s men were beaten 8-1 at Mars. Brothers pairing Andrew and Daniel Watson claimed the only Grantham rubber. Also playing were Dean Patel with Declan Hill, and Dave Chambers with Ian Witham.
