A team from Grantham travelled to North Kesteven Sports Centre in Lincoln for the annual Newark League’s Woodward and Cobb Tournament last Sunday.
The four-strong side were hit with injury just three days before the tournament, leaving Zoe Foote unable to play. Fortunately, her place was filled and the team representing Grantham comprised of Holly Sparks, Sandra Jennings, Andrew Watson and Jack Railton.
They arrived at the venue ready for a full day’s play with the tournament starting at 9am. With six other teams also entered, it was set to be a busy day.
Grantham contested first round and started off well with a 2-1 win in their opening match. New partners Holly and Sandra played well together, and picked up two ladies’ games throughout the day. In the men’s doubles, Andrew and Jack played well together, winning all of their games. They beat some tough opposition to help put Grantham in a strong position.
Grantham also won all of their mixed games, the pairings being Holly with Andrew Watson, and Sandra Jennings with Jack Railton.
They won all six of the matches they played, leaving them victorious as the winners of the tournament, following in the footsteps of the Grantham team that played two weeks previously in the Division One/Two Woodward and Cobb tournament.
