Great Ponton’s Ryan Curtis competed at the English Under-15 National Badminton Championships in Redbridge, Surrey, at the weekend.
Having qualified for the championships, 14-year-old Charles Read Academy student Ryan won his opening singles encounter 21-18/21-18 against his doubles partner, Jack Simpson from Nottinghamshire. But he lost his second match 21-12/21-17 against one of the favourites, Brandon Yap from Essex, after putting up a spirited performance against the eventual semi-finalist.
In the doubles, Ryan and Jack won their opening fixture 22-20/21-19 against Brandon Adams (Herefordshire) and James Moreton-Smith (Oxfordshire) in a thrilling battle, before losing out to the top ranked European player, Rory Easton (Kent), and his partner Jamie Green (Surrey), 21-10/21-10.
Ryan is already the youngest player to play for the Grantham Badminton senior first team and is coached by Paul Mayfield, head of Lincolnshire Badminton Association. Ryan was born in Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, where he developed his love for badminton before moving to Lincolnshire two years ago.
His brother and Great Ponton Primary School pupil Ethan, aged 10, and his doubles partner Harvey Dobson, 9, also from Grantham, both train at the Priory Ruskin Academy under the guidance of John Mayfield.
The pair competed in the Under-11 National Championships at the same venue, but despite a great effort lost their singles and doubles matches in the group stage of the event.
