Grantham Badminton Club fourth men’s team took on Lincoln Albion 3rd in Newark League Division Three at Priory Ruskin Acadamy on Friday.
Grantham’s team comprised four up-and-coming juniors. Carl Jennings with Jack Railton picked up a rubber after a tight battle over three ends. Junior Daniel Watson played with Mike Woodhouse to claim another rubber and narrowly missed out on a second rubber in which one of the three games ended 26-24.
The prize for marathon effort went to junior Josh Gould. Playing with Brian Coyle, all three of their rubbers went to three games, finally finishing just before the 10pm deadline, with the Grantham pair contributing another rubber to the final 6-3 scoreline in favour of Lincoln Albion.
Grantham Ladies 2nd beat Crossed Rackets 2nd at home in Division Two on the same night. Determined junior Sophie Lamb with Sophie Turley triumphed in all three rubbers. Sandra Jennings played with Sarah Bransby and Laura Graves with Sonal Modi.
In the Melton League Division One Mixed, Grantham clashed away with a strong Uppingham in their state-of-the-art six-court hall. Sandra Jennings with Rob Howbrook won two rubbers from three played. Kat Perry with Rob Scarborough managed one rubber and lost another in a tense three-ender. Sonal Modi with Matt Whittle also played but narrowly missed out on a rubber, with the final score 6-3 in Uppingham’s favour.
