BADMINTON: Mixed fortunes for Grantham mixed team

Grantham Badminton Club’s mixed first team enjoyed mixed fortunes in Newark League Division One.

The lost 6-3 to Lincoln St Andrews, with Sophie Turley and Nick Gill scoring Grantham’s three rubbers. Susie Steeples partnered Martin Chambers, and Kerry Durham played with Martin Peat.

However, they turned the tables to beat Westside 2nd 6-3. Nick Gill with Sophie Turley won all three rubbers, Susie Steeples with Ben Johnson won two, and Kerry Durham with Chung Chan won one.

The men’s first team had five of their six players unavailable for their clash with top-of-the-table Cross O’ Cliff, Chung Chan partnered Andrew Watson, Rob Scarborough was with newcomer Yong Li, and Martin Peat played with Dave Coleman.

The ladies’ first team won 6-3 at Cross O’ Cliff. Zoe Foote with Laura Gaves scored a rubber, Sophie Turley with Kerry Durham won two, and Bex Davison with Susie Steeples three for a convincing victory.

The men’s second team also struggled to field their usual side, with half their players unavailable and the reserve third team squad already depleted and unable to fill all the gaps. They were thrashed 9-0 away to Lincoln Albion. Martin Chambers played with Dave Frobisher, Adrian Ackroyd with Rob Scarborough, and Andrew Watson with Carl Jennings.

In Division One of the Melton League, Grantham went down 7-2 against Belvoir, despite five rubbers going to third-end deciders including one from Will Tse with Zoe Foote in his first ever match. Rob Howbrook with Sandra Jennings, and Dave Frobisher with Lesley Jackson, each picked up a rubber.
