Two Grantham Badminton Club teams enjoyed exciting home matches on Friday, but the outcome was different in each case.
Playing in the Newark League Division One, the men’s second string looked to be out of it at 4-2 down against Lincoln Albion.
But when Dave Frobisher with Martin Chambers claimed their second rubber to add to a single rubber from Dave Coleman and Adrian Ackroyd, things looked much closer. Young reserves Andrew Watson and Carl Jennings gritted their teeth in their final rubber to claim that as their first success of the night, making the final result a narrow 5-4 defeat.
In the Melton Mixed League Division One, Grantham thirds reserve Jack Railton with Zoe Foote almost won their first game against strong Uppingham opposition, eventually losing 23-21.
Similarly, Rob Howbrook and Sandra Jennings nearly won their second rubber when playing the opposition’s first pair, picking up the first end before being swept aside in the next two after a change of positional tactics by Uppingham.
Rob Scarborough with Susie Steeples also won a rubber and were gifted another, along with the rest of the team pairings, after the Uppingham third pair conceded their rubbers. The final score was 5-4 to Grantham.
Grantham’s mixed first and second teams are both third in their respective leagues, as are the men’s first team. The men’s seconds, thirds and fourths are sixth, fourth and and third respectively. The ladies’ second team are second in their league.
