Grantham Falcons 41

Newark 64

GRANTHAM Falcons faced a tough task in their second fixture of the season as they faced Newark who were setting the pace in the junior leagues.

The game started with Newark the more confident and they took an early lead. The Falcons took a while to get into their stride but once they found the basket, they grew in confidence. The first quarter finished with Newark holding a slight advantage.

The Falcons were able to use their strength in depth on the bench and the second quarter saw them begin to gain the upper hand as they drew level on points with their opponents.

With the game now close, Newark increased their defence by putting full court pressure on the Falcons. This resulted in a number of turnovers that once again gave Newark the initiative and ultimately a good lead at half time.

Not wanting to let Grantham back into the game, Newark continued with the full court pressure and forced the Falcons into more errors. Their opponents continued to increase their lead as Grantham struggled to gain a foothold in the match.

Falcons continued to work hard throughout and created a number of opportunities for themselves but could not catch the well drilled Newark team.

Grantham’s strong bench meant they continued to fight hard in the closing stages as Newark ran out deserved winners, leaving the Falcons with some hard work before they meet again.
