Louth 33

Grantham Falcons 41

GRANTHAM Falcons began the New Year with a re-match of their first ever league game against Louth who were keen to avenge their previous loss at the hands of the Falcons.

Both teams started slowly with neither able to gain any momentum. The Falcons defence worked well and restricted Louth’s scoring opportunities, but they failed to capitalise at the other end of the court. Grantham worked hard against the two-man defence and created openings but were guilty of failing to take their changes from close range.

The game remained a low scoring affair throughout the first and second quarters but with Grantham able to introduce fresh legs from their strong bench, they maintained their defensive pressure against their opponents. With the Falcons rebounding well offensively to convert a couple of missed shots, they took a small lead going into the interval.

The third quarter followed much the same pattern with both teams lacking the confidence to force the pace enough to open up any sort of a lead. With the Falcons maintaining their effort on defence and continuing to get offensive rebounds, they kept their slim lead throughout the third quarter.

As the game entered the final quarter, Falcons’ lead remained a slim one as they were unable to convert the opportunities they had from the foul line. In the final minute, Louth made a concerted effort on their offence and levelled the scores with seconds remaining. Grantham had time for one last shot but this came up short and the game went into overtime.

As overtime began, the Falcons upped the tempo and took the game to their opponents. This time the players responded and began to run at Louth.

Grantham’s energy on defence restricted Louth to just two successful foul shots and now made their own shots, generated from fast breaks and rebounds.

With the bench again playing their part, the Falcons never looked back and with and took the game with an 8-2 overtime scoreline.

Falcons: Eade, Wilson, Armalis, Gelthorpe-Lewis, Mills, Jacobs, Venables, Aspinall, Rothwell, King, Penford, Pashley.
