Two young members of Browny’s Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed mixed fortunes at a competition held in the Cedric Ford Pavilion at Newark Showground last Thursday night.

The pair, Max Haste and Ben Allen, both weighed in on the night exactly on weight, but 14-year-old Max’s fortunes went no further when he was told his opponent had pulled out of the contest at the last minute.

The Grantham club’s head coach Russ Brown said: “Max was disappointed but he just shrugged it off in readiness for his next opponent.”

Max will next be in action in April when he takes part in the Junior Championships.

Eleven-year-old clubmate Ben Allen contested his first amateur boxing bout at the Newark event.

He fought hard throughout, jabbing and pressuring his opponent from the first bell, and won all three rounds to take victory by a unanimous points decision.

Coach Russ was full of admiration with how his charges had handled both the lows of disappointment and the joys of victory: “Well done to both my boys. I’m very proud.”

Browny’s ABC is the home of Browny’s Gym and is now based at Withambrook Park in Londonthorpe Lane, Grantham.
