GRANTHAM Amateur Boxing Club’s Nathan Wallace was unsuccessful in his bid to retain his ABA Novice Midlands Counties title at Bedworth last Sunday.

Twenty-one-year-old Nathan faced Karl Wiggins (Eastside ABC) in the 67-71kg Class B final at Newdigate Boxing Club and lost 16-13 on points.

Nathan did well in the first of four two-minute rounds, despite taking a lot of body shots. He was stronger in the second round but lost the third round to Wiggins. Nathan bounced back in the fourth round, working hard, but the damage had been done.

Grantham ABC head coach Dean Fardell said that his charge had not fully recovered from a chest infection but had still put up a good fight in a cracking bout, although Dean said Nathan was a bit downhearted at having lost.

Dean said: “Nathan caught him a couple of good ones in the second round, but his timing was not quite there and he needed to be a bit sharper.

“He is proud of what he has achieved. Reaching the final is a feat in itself. He’s done very well and the future’s bright for him.”
