Grantham Amateur Boxing Club’s annual tournament was a great success at The Meres on Saturday, with the highlight being a belt win for a club member.
Club head coach Dean Fardell estimated the event had a crowd of 450-500 who witnessed 11 bouts of boxing.
Dean said: “It was very well supported and a cracking night. The Grantham public came out to support us.”
The star bout saw Grantham ABC’s Nathan Wallace challenge Akim Douglas (Bad Boyz BC) for the vacant middleweight Notts and Lincs Challenge belt.
Nathan started with plenty of combinations and went on to steal all three rounds and claim the vacant belt.
Dean said: “Nathan did us proud again. He outboxed him. We knew what we had to do. Nathan put in a good performance and no-one deserves it more.
“He has done remarkably well in his amateur career.”
Nathan’s mettle will be tested again when he faces a rematch with Douglas on April 18.
Clubmate Terry Bennett was hoping to wrest the Notts and Lincs Challenge welterweight belt from the grasp of Scunthorpe Centurions ABC’s Jordan Needham.
Terry was dominant in the opening round but title holder Needham tired him out in the second to the extent that, despite having a good third round, the Grantham boxer was unable to rescue the fight.
Dean said: “Terry did well in the first and third but lost it in the second. It was a good little bout.”
Terry will get another chance to fight for the belt when the pair have a rematch on April 11.
Dean said the biggest disappointment of the night was that lightweight Curtis Page’s opponent failed to turn up from Burslam ABC.
However, Dean’s spirits were lifted by his club’s youngsters Callum Short and Kristupas Gudonis who took part in skills bouts.
Ten-year-old Callum faced Jake Newman, of Arnold School of Boxing, and Kristupas took on Kian Dixon (Mansfield Bulls ABC).
Dean said: “They both did well and are good prospects. They are going to be good lads.
“I am really pleased with how everyone is improving. It was a fantastic night of boxing.”
