GOLF: Belton Woods’ Grundy aims for Gold

The qualifier for the prestigious Fullers London Pride Gold Medal competition was won by Steve Grundy.

He won the Belton Woods round with a net score of 66, the first hurdle in qualifying for the competition proper.

A total of 84 players will qualify for the National Final which will be held at Woodhall Spa in August, with each county represented by at least two qualifiers in the two-day, 36-hole tournament.

l Sunday’s April Stableford competition was won in Division One by Master Ben Richards with 36 points, defeating Glenn Cooper on countback.

In Division Two, Master Joshua Mackey triumped with a creditable 41 points, five points clear of his nearest rival.


The Marshall’s Monthly Medal for April was won on countback with a net score of 70.

Belton Park’s Lucy Morley and Josie Short took on local rivals Stoke Rochford in the second round of the Daily Mail Women’s Foursomes.

In a fine match played at home, Lucy and Josie prevailed with a handsome 3&2 victory to march on to the third round of the competition.

l The Ladies Coronation Foursomes competition was won by Jacqui Barson and Jan Johnson with 38 points.

Second place went to Sue Addis and Yvonne Bashford with 37 and in third place with 34 were Donna Hayle and Becky Lloyd.

l The Marjorie Moore Salver, a medal competition whose proceeds are donated to a local cancer charity in memory of Marjorie, was won this year by Anna Clarke with net 70.

Runner-up with 71 was Carole Foster on countback from Annette Fordham.


The first mixed event of the season, the Freda Shipley Cup, was won by Daryl Froggatt and Annette Fordham with a score of +6 in the betterball bogey format.

Runners-up were Peter and Jacqui Barson with +5, with Chris and Edina Burns third also with a score of +5.

Shot of the day was by Janni Pask who aced the treacherous par three 24th hole.


The seniors faced stiff opposition today at Blankney GC in a match played under excellent weather conditions on a course in very good condition.

Many of the matches were very close, but Belton Park were defeated 6½-1½.
