GOLF: Ward wins Sudbrook Moor qualifier

Sudbrook Moor’s Saturday monthly qualifier was won with a one point margin by 22-handicap Jeff Ward, who was cut to 20.

His balanced stableford card of 21 out and 20 back was his first Saturday main club victory of his career, and kept Phil Hall out of top spot with his card of 40 points.

Best of Category Four was teenager Aiden Hotchin on 39 points. There were excellent scorecards from Category Two entrants Pete Martin, Nigel Corby, Keith Maclachlan, Rob Jameson and Simon Green, who carded 39 and 38 points.

Runners-up in Category Four were Kevin Turner and Andy Casswell, both on 34 points. Lorna Nichols won the ladies’ prize and the twos pot was shared by Nigel Corby (3) – birdie twos on holes three, four and six – Martin Corby, Phil Hall and Keith Maclachlan.

The event was the first qualifier for the Order of Merit Sword Of Achievement.


Ladies’ section

The December stableford was won in the Silver Division by Annette Fordham with 38 points. Second place went to Sue Mitchell with 35 and third on countback was Joy Stepney. The Bronze division saw Kathleen Bell score a fantastic 45 points to take first place. Sue Hall also scored a very creditable 43 and Pam Wiggins was third with 41.

The Turkey Trot competition was held on Sunday and saw 42 ladies compete over a nine-hole course. The winner with a score of 33.5 was Sheila Mason, second place went to Muriel Gaffney with 34 and Kathleen Bell took third place with 34.5.
