FOLLOWING their promotion at the first time of asking last year, Grantham Hockey Club’s men’s team will begin their 2012/13 East League campaign on September 15 with a trip to Wisbech Town 4th.

The men dropped just five points on their way to the Division 6 (NW) title last season and are looking forward to the challenge posed by the step up in class, led by new captain Oli Phillips.

They will play against teams from Boston, Bourne/Market Deeping, Cambridge, Louth, Newmarket and St Ives between September and March.

Oli said: “Last season was significant for the club as it was our first following the switch from Midlands to Lincolnshire leagues. Not only were we playing new teams and travelling to new areas of the county, we were able to achieve promotion with two games outstanding.

“The success of the team was a result of consistent hard work throughout the season along with the welcome introduction of new players and the re-introduction of some old ones.

“I strongly believe that the sucess of the team and club can be continued throughout the upcoming season and I hope to maintain our high quality of hockey through discipline, passion and hard work.”

l After a season in which they also made significant progress, Grantham’s women begin one week earlier when they travel to Horncastle in the Lincolnshire League.

The women will play teams from Alford, Horncastle, Lincoln, Long Sutton, Louth, Spilsby, Skegness and Woodhall Spa.
