A remarkable drive has boosted the championship hopes of Grantham saloon car racer Olly Allen.
Racing in the third meeting of the season at Snetterton, the local garage owner left rivals in his wake as he took the chequered flag with a stunning giant-killing display.
Olly’s outright victory at the wheel of a 2.0 litre Ford Fiesta was achieved with a cushion of more than six seconds - a stunning margin considering some of the cars behind him were much more powerful.
Olly said: “It was an unbeliveable result and has hopefully made people sit up and take notice of our efforts.
“It shouldn’t really happen that a 2.0 litre mk3 Ford Fiesta beats several much more powerful Ford Cosworths, but that’s what happened.”
The success in race six of the Blue Oval Saloon Series. for Classic Fords on Sunday followed a fourth place overall in race five the day before, which was still enough to earn Olly a win in class.
The performances followed a win in a qualifying session on morning, which like the Sunday race was run on a wet track.
The conditions blunted a little of the power advantage of the biggest cars, but it was still another remarkable win for Olly and earned him pole position.
The weekend was free of mechanical problems for Olly and his team, which includes staff from his garage ORA Motor Services in London Road Grantham.
He was not so fortunate in the previous rounds, at Donnington and Croft, but he still managed two class wins and two seconds.
The results endorse Olly’s decision to make a serious return to motor racing, after several years when his three children were small.
Now, after upgrading the car and winning vital sponsorship arranged by supporter Peter Lackey, Olly is hoping it could be a title-winning comeback.
The next rounds are at Cadwell Park on May 31 and June 1 and the season ends at Spa in Belgium in October.
