Grantham 1

Alford 2nd 2

Stout defence kept Grantham in the game but it was fair to say that Alford produced the best team play, working well to pass through and probe the home team’s defence.

Arnold Manguzis, Grantham’s new keeper, produced some good saves and with the defence of David McDonald, Graham Johnson, Nick Wraith, Nick Jacks and Mark Pearce, helped to clear the lines.

Eventually play resulted in an Alford goal when a ball played into the circle, unfortunately deflected by a Grantham player, passed by the bemused and rooted keeper.

The goal stirred the Grantham team and some more positive play resulted in them equalising. The ball came down Alford’s left wing was well won by Mark Pearce, played up to David Braunton and through to Paul Hollingworth who slot past the Alford keeper.

Grantham had a short corner just before half time but Braunton’s solid strike went straight to the keeper.

The second half brought a renewed push from Alford, with limited forays forward from Grantham. The home defence held out but finally the pressure came to bear and the visitors scored a deserved second goal.

Still Grantham defended resolutely and Manguzis made some good saves. Jacks and Johnson made strong tackles and helped return the ball to midfield, and left-back Mark Pearce made some good runs forward.

Grantham’s man of the match was Nick Jacks.
