Around 60 swimmers from Grantham Swimming Club took part in the recent Boston Open at The Meres leisure centre.
For many swimmers, the hard work and extra training they undertook over the Christmas holiday paid dividends.
No fewer than eight club records tumbled over the two-day event. William Hawkes was on form, setting five new club records for the boys 11 year age group.
Hannah Underwood swam a superb 100m backstroke to claim the nine-year-old girls’ record, and Sophie Culpin set a new club record for 15-year-old girls in 200m freestyle after a gruelling race with Grantham’s Hannah Ford. Sophie also broke the 200m Individual Medley record, swimming a fantastic time of 2min 30.17sec.
The biggest personal best improvement of the weekend was recorded by Imogen Raistrick who shaved a massive 36 seconds off her previous 400m freestyle time, down to 6:17.15. There were other great swims from the girls, including Amelia Peters, Katie Hitchcock, Maddie Barnes, Sadie Langdon, Chloe Smith, Alice-May Marriot, Hayley Milne, Lara Hawkes, as well as sisters Alisha and Kiera Tyers.
The boys were not to be outdone with personal bests from Luke Marriot, Steven Dakin, Harry Fowler, Adam Daybell, Jacob Allen and Steven Verheul.
It was the first serious competition for some of the club’s newest swimmers but they rose to the challenge and showed great determination. Abbie Phillips, Ella Turner and Hannah Blake were no exception.
It was the final opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the Lincolnshire County ASA Championships which will be held in Louth. Emily Lambe, Sadie Langdon and Harriet Underwood qualified for the first time, bringing the total number of swimmers due to compete at county level to 59 in 427 events, the most in the club’s history.
After the event, the GSC head coach Maciej Rakowski said: “Boston Open results showed that swimmers are getting stronger each month. It is fantastic to see that our younger swimmers have not only qualified for the ‘Counties’, but also will have a chance to fight for medals.”
