A teenage talent is emerging at Grantham Amateur Boxing Club, according to the coaching staff.

Kristupas Gudonis, who is 15, is a youngster with the potential to fight for area titles.

That was the prediction of the club’s senior coach Dean Fardell after the Lithuanian-born fighter triumphed in his first-ever bout on Saturday.

Kristupas, who lives on Thames Road in Grantham, beat Josh Facer on a unanimous points decision at Cleethorpes.

Dean said: “All three judges gave Kris the decision and we are all very proud of him down at the club.

“He has got a lot of talent and I’m sure he will end up fighting for titles in the future.

“The lad never misses a session at the club and he is really keen to learn.”

Kristupas’ Grimsby opponent, who was also 15, came out strongly in the first round.

But the Grantham boxer took control of the fight in the second round, landing plenty of jabs and catching him with right-hand shots which led to a standing eight count from the referee.

Kristupas, who attends Priory Ruskin Academy in the town, dominated the third round with his opponent having to take a further two standing eight counts.

He was rightly given a good ovation when the officials announced the points decision for the bout, which was at the Beechcomber Caravan Park.

It was a big step-up for Krsitupas to make, but he passed the test with flying colours.

His only previous competitive experience was in skills bouts which are designed to develop young boxers in an environment where head shots are discouraged.

Kristupas performed well in those events and Dean considered him ready to take to the ring on Saturday.

The coach added: “When Kris first came to us he couldn’t even skip.

“He’s been with us at the gym for a year-and-a-half now and he’s really coming along well.”

Anyone interested in attending a boxing session with the club, on Harlaxton Road, can go along Monday to Thursday, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
