AN exciting new and yet retro sport is attracting women and girls across the country – and next Saturday is your opportunity to experience it for yourselves.
Roller derby comes to The Meres leisure centre on August 20 for a double header with bouts between the Bombshell Bruisers and Manchester Roller Derby, and the Damebusters versus Newcastle.
The event is entitled the Jolly Holislay and is being run by Lincolnshire Bombers Roller Girls who have been using Grantham’s leisure centre for open-to-all training sessions on Friday evenings.
Invented in America, contemporary roller derby is a predominantly female game. The contact sport is based on formation roller skating around an oval track by two teams. Points are scored when the designated scoring player of a given team laps members of the opposing team – if they are not blocked in the process.
If you are interested to see what all the fuss is about, doors open at 1pm and tickets are £7 or on the door if still available. There will be stalls and cakes and spectators will also be invited to an after-match party at the Playhouse.
Tickets are available online at www.lincolnshire-bombers.com
