SALOON car racing hot shot Craig Currie registered his best result of the season so far in the latest round of the 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK at Oulton Park on Sunday.
Craig drove his Team Pyro Clio to fifth place in round eight of the premier one-make saloon car championship which forms part of the support racecard to the British Touring Car Championship.
Following a few set-up issues and a couple of spins in qualifying, Craig got to within half a second of pole position, but that was only good enough for 10th on the grid, such is the level of competition.
Craig had not raced in the wet before but took to the conditions well and was soon up to eighth place after a good start.
Craig said: “After the first lap I thought I would follow the pack to determine my pace. On lap three, entering Cascades corner, the back end came round sending me into a good drift. I managed to hold it out of the barrier but lost three places.”
Craig regained his composure during the next couple of laps and caught the leading pack, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. Eight more laps saw him up to fifth place before the chequered flag at the end of the 30-minute race.
Craig said: “I picked my way through with a bit of bashing and barging.”
The next round of the championship takes place at Croft in Yorkshire next weekend.
