BARNSTONE saloon car racer Garrie Whittaker competed in the Sub Zero Championship race at Rockingham Motor Speedway on Sunday.
Behind the wheel of his trusty BMW E36 M3 machine, Garrie took to the track with 29 other cars for a 15 minute qualifying session, after which he had posted the fastest time of 1min 27.962sec for the 1.94-mile circuit.
Garrie came out for his 20-minute race later in the day and took his place at the front of the grid. After the race got under way from a rolling start, fellow front row man Andy Robinson took the lead.
Garrie drove a good race and stayed glued to Robinson’s bumper for a few laps until he seized his chance. Once in front, Garrie soon started opening up a gap.
The race was stopped after 15 minutes due to debris on the track, by which time Garrie was well out in the lead by nearly 15 seconds from Joss Ronchetti.
This latest win meant Garrie also became joint leader in the overall championship but a driver from a different class will be crowned champion due to the way the championship is structured, so he finished as runner-up.
Garrie’s next race will be at Brands Hatch at the end of the month where he will be looking to secure the 2011 Kumho Tyres BMW Championship.
