BARNSTONE saloon car racer Garrie Whittaker took a great stride towards capturing the BMW Kumho Tyres Championship at Oulton Park on Saturday.

With two races and one qualifying session, it was a busy day but turned out to be a very productive one for Garrie.

Going out early Saturday morning on the 1.65-mile Fosters circuit, Garrie posted a time of 1min 6.378sec in his BMW E36 M3 which was good enough for pole position out of the 30 cars entered for the race. The time represented an average speed of 89.70mph.

In the first of the afternoon’s two 20-minute races, Garrie added to his victory tally, winning by nearly 12 seconds from David Kempton.

Race two was a closer affair which Garrie only won by 3.27sec from Thomas Knight. Garrie registered the fastest lap of the entire day in the second race with a time of 1:05.798 at a little more than 90mph.

With the two wins safely under his belt, Garrie travels to Pembrey in South Wales next month knowing that he is not only leading the championship, but also that if he gains a minimum of three second places over that weekend he will have fulfilled his goal for the season and be the new champion for 2011.

Garrie has 200 championship points and has a lead of 10 points from second placed driver Paul Bellamy. Garrie has also clinched the class A title in which he also competes.
