GRANTHAM Squash Club has added a former top professional to the coaching staff roster at its Harlaxton Road base.

Club chairman Willie Murdoch has welcomed ex-World number four Tania Bailey to join head coach Martin Gibson and his three staff on the already well-established coaching set-up at Grantham.

A member of the club since she was nine years old, Tania was forced to retire from professional competition following a succession of injuries and operations. But she still plays for the Grantham club regularly and represents the men’s first team in the Notts League.

Now that she has retired from the top ranks, Tania said she wanted to spend more time coaching, and with her exceptional credentials, budding players could not ask for a better mentor.

Tania said: “As a player I reached World number four and England number one, I was British Champion and finalist in the British Open and US Open.

“I won a silver and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and gained over 80 caps for the England senior team, and captained the team to winning the World Team Championships.”

As a Level 2-qualifed coach, Tania has worked with all standards of players already, from under-11s to senior players, and is embarking on the Level 3 course this year.

Tania said she will be bringing in some of England’s top ranked juniors to work with her and said she was looking forward to being part of the coaching set-up at Grantham Squash Club.

She said: “I have worked on regional and national junior squads and I will be doing more of this from now on.

“There are already numerous great coaches who cater for beginners and juniors, up to advanced and senior players. Between us all we should be able to help everyone that would like coaching.”

The Grantham club has expanded its coaching structure over the last 18 months, headed up by Martin Gibson who works mainly with elite juniors and advanced adults. He is also county coach and regional coach for England Squash and Racketball.

Racketball is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and Grantham Squash Club is keen to help in its progression.

Junior coach funding has come through Vincent Brittain at Inspire+ and Sportivate, and assisting Martin and Tania are school sport squash co-ordinator Colin Gibson, and club junior and adult coaches Graeme Williamson and Clive Henderson.

Graeme and Clive head the Mini Squash programme, the objective of which is to feed through potential juniors to County and Regional squads. Individual and group coaching is available.

Beginner junior sessions for ages five to eight are held on Fridays between 5pm and 5.45pm.

Improved juniors aged nine to 12 follow on until 6.30pm. Age 13 to 16 Pro junior sessions are on Wednesdays between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Girls only sessions are held on Saturday mornings. Cost is £3 per player.

Membership for children under 11 is £5 and for 11 to 16s it is £10 a year. Free play is also available for juniors during off-peak periods, weekends and during school holidays. Full adult membership for squash and gym use is £20 per month.
