Cliffedale Chandlers National Junior League team were in action in Wellingborough on Saturday, competing in Day Three of the competition.

After Day Two’s heroics and promotion to Division Two, the team went into the day’s competition knowing it was going to be tough.

First match of the day was against Westfield and at the end of the tie honours were even, with each side winning three matches apiece.

Next up was Lillington B who were favourites to win the division and they proved their credentials with a thumping 6-0 win over Chandlers team, but the score belied the effort and fact that the Chandlers team played some brilliant table tennis at times.

Round three saw Lillington C as the opponents and a closely fought contest ended in Lillington’s favour, 4-2.

There was no rest for the Chandlers quartet of Benjamin ‘Jimmy’ Rigby, Ash ‘The Smash’ Willows, Divya ‘The Destroyer’ Prabhu and Helen ‘Beast’ Turley, as they next faced another strong team in the shape of Milton Keynes B. After some fantastic matches, Milton Keynes proved their strength and ran out 5-1 winners.

The fifth round saw the team playing for pride as their final match was against Great Stukeley, another one of the division favourites. This tie again could have gone either way but the team from Cambridgeshire prevailed, 4-2.

This left the Chandlers team trailing in the division but with one more day to play to come on Februar 27, there is another opportunity for success

All the team played with great effort and pride. Benjamin won four of his eight matches, Ash and Helen won two of their eight, whilst Divya was unfortunate not to win any of her six but played some extremely good table tennis.

l Sunday saw the Chandlers Senior Brit team in action, also in Wellingborough, in the British Senior League, where they beat local rivals Nottingham Sycamore 6-4 and then Halton TTC 9-1.They currently sit fourth in the table, only six points behind leaders Westfield 2nd.
