Five Cliffedale Chandlers players were in action at the inaugural Blitz Table Tennis Club two-star competition in Gainsborough on Sunday. All played extremely well with some fantastic results.

Frazer Winfield made it out of his Cadet boys group and into the second round of matches where he faced Adam Gent to whom he lost 3-0. In the under-13s, Frazer won one group match but it was not enough to see him through to the knockout stages.

Emily Winfield progressed from her under-11s group into the plate competition, but lost in the semi-final despite playing some excellent table tennis.

Stefania Popa, who competed in the Cadet and under-13 girls, tried her upmost but failed to progress from the group and plate stages.

Then came the two stars of the day and both of them from the younger members of the group. Lucy ‘The Smiler’ Bridle made it through to the under-11 girls plate final in which she finished runner-up. Although she did struggle in the under-13s, the experience gained by playing girls a lot older and with more experience should hold her in good stead.

Jai ‘Dynamo’ Mistry Moulton progressed through to and finished up as winner in the under-11 boys plate final, but he also struggled in the under-13s against older and stronger opposition.

Club chairman Darran Leete was overjoyed with how the youngsters from the club performed: “With a lot of the older players not taking part, it was a chance for the youngsters to show us that all the efforts they have put into training is really beginning to pay off.

“They really stepped up to the plate to represent the club today and I’m really pleased for them.

“We’ve had a slight change of emphasis in training, with ideas brought forward by the new club development officer Tim Bridle, and they are beginning to show dividends already.”

This Saturday, Cliffedale Chandlers are holding their very own two-star competition at The Meres leisure centre, so if you fancy seeing table tennis in action first hand, just pop along. Events start at 8.45am and are scheduled throughout the day.
