It was a busy weekend for Cliffedale Chandlers players, including the club’s own two star competition in which they fielded a good entry – Benjamin Rigby, Ben Johnson, Flynn Conolly, Josh Kettle, Frazer Winfield, Emily Winfield, Sam Wright, Sam Bailey, Ashley Willows and Trafford Mason.

All played extremely well, with the stand out performance coming from Emily Winfield who reached the under-11 girls’ semi-final. Unfortunately, she lost a tight match but was still smiling at the end.

Benjamin Rigby and Ben Johnson took part in the Bishop Auckland TTC the following day. Ben competed in the Cadet boys and made it to the second round, whilst Benjamin had a tough group and failed to progress.

Chandlers were also well represented at the ESTTA schools event which was held not only at The Meres leisure centre but also at Priory Ruskin Academy.

Priory was the stage for Cliffedale Primary School girls’ team to win their group and progress to the next stage. The team had a huge Chandlers/GAPS influence, with Stefania Popa and Lucy Bridle putting in some very strong performances.

Sunday also saw the King’s School boys in ESSTA action, with the team consisting of Sam Bailey, Flynn Connolly, Aalhad Kulkarni and Viren Panchal. After drawing two and losing one match, it all went down to a countback and unfortunately King’s were knocked out and failed to progress to the next round.

Meanwhile in Nottingham, Matt Leete and Nathan Butler were in Notts Grand Prix action.

Both had tough groups in the Men’s Band 1, Matt making the semi-final but losing 3-2 to eventual winner Ismalia Akindaya

On the Sunday, Matt and Nathan were in Men’s U21 action and both made it out of the group stage.

Nathan fell foul in the second phase to former Chandler Adam Harrison, 3-0,who then defeated Matt 3-1 in the quarter-final final.

Both Matt and Nathan, as well as being members of Cliffedale Chandlers, also play and train at Grantham College Table Tennis Academy who themselves fielded a strong entry to the Grand Prix, including Italian duo Damiano Seratti and Chiara Colantoni who train and coach at the academy, as well coaching at the Chandlers Tuesday night session.

Chiara made it to the women’s final in which she lost out to England number one Kelly Sibley. going down 3-1 in the final.
